Draft Assessment on Glyphosate under Review

Draft Assessment on Glyphosate under Review

Wednesday, 29 September 2021

On September 23rd, 2021, ECHA announced the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and ECHA have launched a 60-day consultation period on the initial scientific evaluations of glyphosate. All interested parties can comment on the draft assessment carried out by the Assessment Group of Glyphosate (AGG).

Following the consultations, which are the first step in the assessments, each Agency will consider the comments relevant for their respective process. The AGG and ECHA’s Committee for Risk Assessment (RAC) will consider the comments and data submitted regarding the harmonized classification process.  These considerations will be taken forward when RAC develops its opinion on the classification of glyphosate under the CLP Regulation.

Glyphosate is currently known, prior to and following the assessment by ECHA in 2017, to cause serious eye damage and be toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects.

The RAC’s hazard classification will be used by EFSA to finalise the peer review, expected in late 2022, and representatives of all 27 Member States will later decide whether to renew the approval of glyphosate use in the EU.
